Q: Mono in Infants

Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone's infants here have ever contracted Mono? My cousin was here a few weeks back and she has come down with Mono. I am worried because while she was here, I drank out of her glass, Yes I know STUPID, and before I knew that she had mono I would sometimes eat off his spoon to get him to eat ( I think at one point or another we have all done that). He now has the typical symptoms that infants get if they have Mono ( cold symptoms) but I am just hoping its a cold. He has no fever so I don't think its Mono, however I am watching him VERY closely for it. He has been restless the last few days, and not sleeping well. He usually sleeps through the night and has good naps during the day, but has not the last few days. He was up at 4:40 am yesterday morning, and he stirred and woke lots from 3:30 am this morning, tho he did not get out of bed till 7. He is asleep again now at 9.

If anyone has ever come across mono in a infant, please let me know, or if you know anything about mono in infants, I would appreciate any information.

Check for swollen lymph nodes in his neck. They're under his jaw, just where they'd be in an adult. When I had mono, mine were the size of golf balls. It's one of the sure-fire indicators of mono.

Thanks. We had a pretty awful weekend. Friday night Chandler was up all night with fever and could not get comfortable. Saturday his fever kept going up till it reached 102.5. We gave him baths and kept washing him with a cool cloth, and had a fan on. Finally dropped enough that he finally went to sleep. I did take him to the doctor, but because he would not let him near his mouth he could not do a swab for Strep as we were exposed to that too. He prescribed antibiotics because he is obviously not well. He is now not eating much so we are off to see the doctor again this morning, or as soon as they can get us in. He screams as soon as he sees a bottle and will not eat it so it must be hurting his throat. I am concerned as well that its the antibiotics, possibly making his belly hurt therefor the lack of food. Plus he needs to eat to take the antibiotics, so I have not been able to give those today yet.

I will update once I know more.

Wow. I hope you all can get things figured out and your little man gets well very soon. It's hard seeing babies sick. Sad

Thanks. We have an appointment for in a few hours. I did get some cereal into him, but he will not drink anything. As soon as he sees a bottle or a cup he starts pushing it away. Thats the thing I am worried about the most is not getting any fluids. I will keep you updated this afternoon.

Have you tried popsicles? I think Pedialyte makes some. That would at least get SOME fluids into him.

Hope everything is okay with the little man. I'm not familiar with mono in infants but I hope that's not what it is. Keep us updated!

Hi girls,

We are home now. He is still throwing up some when he coughs. Its no fun thats for sure. He just has a bad case of the flu, THANK GOD.... I cannot imagine if it was Mono. SO glad it is not. Doctor told me not to worry about the eating but to try popsicles and pedialyte. So I have the pedialyte and will get some popsicles picked up to try as well. They have all fruit ones and I will try those. He loves Orange juice so we will give the Orange ones a go. I guess that we will just have to wait it out and keep an eye on him. I did get one bottle into him today and a little cereal and a bowl of peas!! Yay.

Hi Everyone,

Things are a bit better today. Tho we were up from 2:30 am this morning until about 4:45. He was hungry so he ate, but from his coughing he threw it all back up. after that he finally went to sleep and slept until 7:30. He is having a relaxing day home with Mommy. So I hope that that helps him get better soon.
