My mother has been recently diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, and we have been battling with this illness for about 6 months ago. Before she finally fell off the deep end, and had her first psychotic episode, she lived alone while working a full-time job, had an apartment, a new car, and lived a very normal life. Something finally pushed her over, and she has literally lost everything. It was one big snowball affect that took a whole TWO MONTHS to complete ruin her life. She lost her job, got evicted out of her apartment, and had her car repossessed. She was paranoid about her family, thinking we were trying to poison her and kill her. She has no family that she could live with, and I am her daughter is off at college living in a student apartment. She refuses to follow up with her doctor, and is given only a week "trial" medication, and then doesn't go back to get another prescription!!! She has been baker acted 5 times total, because she refused to admit her strange behavior, and her delusions and hallucinations were taking over her life.
She has been homeless now for 4 months, and is living in and out of hotels that we pay for, and then at the salvation army. She becomes paranoid about the S.A. and the people that live there with her. She has made a friend that has been literally keeping her alive these last 4 months. He talks to her, keeps her eating (because she won't eat by herself), makes sure she stays clean, and tries to help her through her schizophrenia, because she refuses to get treatment. He just told us tonight that he cannot keep doing this with her, and it has become to much for him to take care of. He is leaving her tomorrow, and never coming back. My question is what can we do to put her somewhere that is stable that will get her the help she needs and the also give her medication and therapy she needs to become functional. We have tried everything we know in the legal system (i.e. baker act, involuntary examination etc.) but since she is over 18, laws are difficult to force her into treatment without her consent(which she will NOT do). What can we do to help her because GOD knows she won't take any steps to help herself? I'm afraid if we don't find some kind of hope we are going to loose her forever. Whether that be she ends up dead or killing herself because she is depressed. Help us with something we are not seeing, or we don't know.
Please and thank you!!!!!!!
