It is impossible to provide an accurate answer to your question without having examined this lesion. However, moles (nevi) are very common, especially in light-skinned people, and the vast majority of such pigmented lesions do not contain cancer.
Melanoma, a cancer of the skin, can either arise within an existing mole or as a new lesion. Clinical features of pigmented skin lesions that are concerning for melanoma include asymmetrical or uneven borders or edges, bleeding, itching, uneven pigmentation or multiple colors within the lesion, raised or thickened areas of the lesion, and progressive enlargement of the lesion.
If this mole has any of the characteristics that I describe above, then you should see your physician for further evaluation.
