asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 29th, 2009
Thick white sticky discharge (looks similar to semen) for 1.5 yrs now. Just discharge, no clumps. Smells like greasy fries or elmer's glue for lack of better comparison. Went to student health center multiple for PAPs (3 or 4) beginning Oct 07 (never had problem before then), found no bacteria or reason. On last exam found e coli was put on antibiotic. (no symptoms changed). Graduated and cannot afford dr. but still having discharge daily and heavily. Have not been going good w birth control in past 6 mo. Missed multiple pills per month. I got a 9 mo. supply of pills before I graduated (may 08) so they were free. Have not been on birth control for 1.5 month bc can't afford doctor. Also have sharp pain in lower left side during deep intercourse or when inserting tampon. Always in same place and always piercing but not lasting. Sometimes it pierces short pain without agitation from sex or tampon. Have not had period since been off birth control. last wk same discharge but brown for 4 dys

Given your symptoms (period missing, vaginal discharge and sharp pain during sex) you have to visit a gynecologist. Sorry, but without a vaginal examination, Pap-test, vaginal microbiological smear and gynecological ultrasound examination it can not be given a precise diagnosis.

A period missing could be the result of pregnancy (pregnancy test also requested) but it could also be due to the birth control pills you took recently.

In most cases, vaginal discharge is due to a vaginal infection. Not all vaginal infections could be diagnosed with a Pap-test so you need a microbiological examination for several possible infections (bacterial vaginosis, soor, Chlamydia, etc.). Certain genital infections could also cause irregular vaginal bleeding.

Painful sex (dyspareunia) could be due to many reasons including genital infection, tumors, etc.
