Q: miscarriage possible?

a couple of weeks ago my wife found out that she was pregnant, last week she found small spots of blood when urinating so decided to call the midwife. we were referred to hospital for a scan, this was on saturday 25/7/09
the lady that did the ultra sound after a while, said I'm sorry but i cannot find a heartbeat
a short while later, after waiting in a side room we were taken into a room tlo speak to another woman who advised that the embrio was about 7 weeks old, and my wife estimates that she concieved 8 weeks ago
i asked the lady what are the chances that they just couldn't find the hearbeat but the baby is fine, she never answered me at all.
she said we have to decide to opt for 1 of 3 choices
1 a D&C
2 Tablets to bring on miscarriage
3 go back in 10 days for another scan

now this is where we are really confused and need your advice

if there is totally no chance that our baby is still alive, then why are we being given the option of going back for a scan in 10 days, are we clinging onto false hope with this option
if the embrio is only approximately 7 weeks old and my wife thinks she is approximately 8 weeks pregnant, and the fact that neither is exact is it just to rearly to definately say the baby has no heartbeat and has died

awaiting your reply

Hi Richard,

I totally feel for you guys as I have been there. I have actually had 3 consecutive miscarriages, the last one 2 weeks ago.

What I would suggest is to definately go back for another scan to make sure in your own minds that there definately is no heartbeat before you go ahead with a D&C or tablets, otherwise you may always wonder.

It is better for the miscarriage to happen on its own as the D&C can be a bit traumatic but it is needed sometimes if the baby does not go on it's own.

I know the pain of what you are going through! all the best to you both! x
