Q: Period Lasting Three Weeks
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 1st, 2008
I have been bleeding for three weeks now. I take oral contraceptives because I usually have irregular periods, but I have never had one for this long. I missed a pill and followed the directions for catching up with them as instructed. I wonder if the contraceptives are making me bleed this long or is it possible that something else may be wrong? Or if this is a sign that I was pregnant and am experiencing a miscarriage? I dont have an appointment with my doctor for at least 2 weeks so I was hoping you can help me in some way.

Contraceptive pills are often used to regulate irregular periods or excessively heavy bleeding, but rarely cause bleeding if used properly. It seems unlikely that missing one dose would cause this level of bleeding. You might consider taking another pregancy test as the results would appear as positive if you were miscarrying. You can also call your doctor's office prior to your appointment to discuss this with him or her.
