Q: Mirena IUD and vaginal itch

I had my IUD inserted Dec. 2007 and well I developed an itch this past November and well I have tried over the counter creams and cleaned it well and it still itches like crazy. My strings are really short so I know that that's not the problem and I don't have any infections. I can't decide if it might be my detergent or my soap but I really could just scream it itches so bad. Sometimes I scratch so hard I could almost have an orgasm. I want to have it removed but can't run the risk of getting prego again. Got any advice.
