Mirena into menopause? I'm 50 and have had bouts of erratic heavy bleeding and clotting that have made me anemic over the past 2 yrs. Progesterone cream helps but every so often is not enough. I'm scared to use Mirena due to negative effects women report. I've started getting some hot flashes, fuzzy thinking and other signs my estrogen is beginning to decrease. MD wants me to use Mirena but I can't find any info for women my age who are trying it. What can I expect if I'm changing over to menopause? When do I have it removed? Can I become progesterone dominant???

Hello,
Welcome to ehealthforum.
You can discuss about getting started on HRT (hormone replacement therapy) since your symptoms do suggest possibility of menopause. Your hormonal level evaluation will help to confirm this. Consider taking a second opinion about this with another gynecologist. If the ovarian cysts are progressing, consider discussing about alternate treatment and surgical removal of cysts to help control the bleeding. Other causes for prolonged bleeding like endometrial hyperplasia and other hormonal derangements should be ruled out.
Take care.

Mirena and menopause
Hi, I am 51 yrs old and I have had my Mirena for five years now. Alhtough I have not had any clotting and such I did have heavy menstration and the Mirena did help me without any major side effects. Everyone is different but for me this was the best decision I made. I now am concerned about having it replaced. My GYN said blood work shows I am in menopause and would no longer need the Mirena. I am trying to find out if the Mirena can give false menopausal readings.

Just a thought to keep in mind- people are more likely to go online and seek out forums to post in when they're having problems than when they aren't. There are a lot of women (myself included) who are using Mirena happily (and I've never had a child). Look at the numbers and percentages of women who have issues, and take any risk factors into account (smoking, age?, family history), but most importantly, have a long discussion with an OBGyn, or two!
Best of luck to you!

I am 52 and had the Mirena for a few months short of 5 years. I was having hot flashes, weight gain etc and hadn't had a period in 2 years. My primary dr did the blood test and said I was post menopausal so I had the Mirena removed. Within a few weeks of that, my breasts were so sore and I was feeling like I had pms all over again. Sure enough, yesterday, after over 2 years, I got my period. I can't believe it. If I just went through all those hot flashes for nothing (yes, they have subsided since Mirena was removed) and have to go through all of that again, I am not happy. As far as I'm concerned the Mirena threw me into menopause and now that it's gone I'm right back where I started and my doctor told me they won't use Mirena anymore on women over 50. Terrific.

Mirena and early menopause??
Hi there! I'm a bit confused...Are you saying that you believe you prematurely reached menopause due to Mirena? I am only 46 and am on my second Mirena. I LOVE it! However, I just started getting hot flashes (WOW) and am wondering what the hell is going on! Doesn't 46 seem a bit young? Now, I'm wondering if I should have this sucker out if it is bringing on menopause so early! Any advise you have would be appreciated!!

early menapause & Mirena
I am 45 and just started having hot flashes also. I am on my second mirena - I like the fact that I don't have a period, but am beginning to think that Mirena is the cause of my complete lack of sex drive. I am wondering if I have it removed will I go back to normal and have a desire for sex and hopefully stop the onset of menapause? My Mom was well into her 50's before she began menapause. Any info on life after Mirena would be appreciated!

I am 51 and just had mine take out after 7+ years. I first had it placed due to heavy periods, anemia, typical signs of peri-menopause. It was removed one week ago, and I would recommend it to anyone. I had zero problems. Don;t be scared off of using Mirena because of negative posts, Positive experiences are seldom shared.

Hormone Replacement Therapy - Go natural
What about natural therapies? I understand Dr. Theresa Dale has written against HRT in her book Revitalize Your Hormones. She believes HRT using drugs can be very dangerous and suggests more natural ways to restart the body's own hormones.

Though many people write about holisitic and natural remedies, one should always look for *fact* to back up beliefs, especially when it concerns your health. Look for references to studies and tests that have been conducted on different therapies/medications & inform yourself!

Mirena 'string' location
I have had my string 'come and go' for five years! My doctor has my string position checked every couple of years if he is concerned about it moving or growing into the wall of the uterus (which happened to me during my last one). A simple ultrasound shows mine within seconds. From what he has told me, it's not a big deal if you cannot locate the string. Usually, I can't find it, but he finds it quite easily when he examines me.

Mirena
Hi, I am 53 and had a Mirena fitted for 12 years, i am on my 3rd one. All i can say is for me it changed my life in a positve manner. I have not yet begun the menopause and there certainly has been no suggestion of Mirena bringing it on ! BTW, i have never had children and have found the amount of pain involved in inserting it all boils down to the doctor doing it, just like with a smear.

Im a 52 yr old woman, in the menopause, mirena is due to be removed in April after 5 years, my doctor has told me to leave it as it will keep on working but without the benefits of hormones. Would like to know if it really will keep working or could I become pregnant?

mirena IUD
I am 50yo and had Mirena placed 4 years ago. Just went to see my doc last year and she said leave it in. There is very low dose of progesterone in Mirena and it supposed to help menopause, even prevent cancer. I am leaning toward leave it in until? I am still searching for that answer. Will check back this post.

Mirena Warning
I had my Mirena in for 3 yrs & decided to get it out so I could try for another baby. I had to have it surgically removed because it was imbedded in my uterus. It took about 4 months to get a period. I bled on & off for 3 weeks. It was heavy with bad cramps & had to take Proved a to stop it. I tried getting pregnant for 3 months after & I never had a period again. I started having hot flashes, night sweats, headaches, weight gain, mood swings, depression, & a real bad fishy smell. My Dr ran some tests & it turns out I'm going through full blown menopause & I'm only 36 yrs old. I cannot have anymore babies my Dr told me unless I use someone else's eggs & do invetro. Oh like that's so easy to do. It's way too expensive & I don't want to use anyone's eggs. I want my baby to come from me & my husband. I feel the mirena caused my early menopause & I heard I'm not the only one this happened to. This should be included in the Mirena lawsuit. I'm so depressed right now I don't even want to live anymore. This has caused me & my family a lot of stress. I'm so miserable with all the symptoms & nothing really helps. I can't have estrogen because I have a Protien C Deficiency a blood clotting disorder. So I'm taking zoloft, welbutrim, & clonidine to ease the symptoms but, it doesn't seem to help. My Dr didn't even council me before he inserted the Mirena. So I didn't know any of the risks & the brochure didn't say anything about that you might not be able to get your period back ever or may not be able to have any more babies. I hate the Mirena & I don't recommend it but, do what you want because I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do. I'm just warning everyone what I've been going through & it's ruining my relationship & my life! If I die it's all the Mirena & my Dr.s fault. So screw the Bayer Company & all the Dr.s who don't warn or council their patients about the risks about the Mirena.

I am 51 & just had my second Mirena removed. Blood tests showed that I am in menopause & I have also been put on hormone patches. Two weeks after the Mirena has been removed I am having the worst bleeding ever experienced!! It has incapacitated me! I have been home for two days! My GP has prescribed tablets to help stop the bleeding (Cyklokapron). I have to take 3 tablets four times a day. This is a nightmare. I too have suffered mood swings, headaches & weight gain with Mirena, but did not connect the these issues until reading on this site. It did stop my regular period & helped in this regard. However,I hope now that it has been removed my life will get back to normal & I will go through menopause gently with the HRT.
