I was on medication for depression until a year ago when I got pregnant (I stopped them due to risk to the baby) it actually was getting worse and was considering going on the medication anyway but I waited until the baby was born and 2 months ago, I had mirena inserted. I was going to get "fixed" but the doctor recommended mirena instead since it stops your periods, and I've had the coil before so I figured, hey why not.
I haven't really had any horrible side effects to report only a weird discharge instead of a period (which I'd prefer to a period anyway!)but I went online just to make sure that this discharge was normal. Apparently there are some real horror stories out there about mirena, and most people say they only started like 6 months afterwards. The thing that scares me is the depression and suicidal thoughts some of these women reported. However, since being on mirena, I've actually found my depression to be lessening and feel really no need to go back on paxil. I actually feel better than I have the last couple of years! What I need to know is.. is it possible that mirena could have opposite effects on people already depressed? Or should I be worried that my depression will come back with a vengence in a few months?

Somebody please help.

I actually was kinda in the same boat as you. I had depression then when I found out I was pregnant I quit taking Meds. Then after my daughter was born I got Mirena put in... I've had Mirena now for 3 years and haven't had a problem (or period) with mine. As far as the depression I didn't have any problems until just recently I found out my boyfriend doesn't want to get married or have another baby at all. And found that the depression is setting back in. So are far as your question goes about depression with use of Mirena lessening... I just think you are probably very happy and now you have a child to think of instead of yourself and plus children are a natural boost to the mood. =) So with my personal experince I would say no Mirena does not have an opposite effect to people who are already depressed. Hope this helps!
