Hi,

I am 40 and have had a turn for the worse in my health over the last year.

About a year ago, I suddenly got hospitalized due to heart palpatations. I had low potassium. After a week of supplaments it got better but I felt "fluttery" from time to time for months. During this time, I upped my intake with lots of fruits and citrus daily.

Secondary problem that may be related: I suddenly get stabbing / vascular spasm headaches on the right side of my head just above and behind the ear. After going through an MRI, catscan, etc. I found out that I could no longer touch milk products (and I was an almost daily cereal eater, cottage cheese, cheese, icecream, etc.). So now I have some kind of strange problem with milk (no problems in my intestinal track, just a freeking ice pick intermittent headache that takes me out.)

OK, low potassium again 2 months ago. This time we do a bunch of tests and a 24 hour urine test shows I am passing large ammounts through my urine. I also now have borderline high blood pressure (about 140 over 90) and my aldosterone level is in the "high of the normal scale" and Renin is undetectable. I am on 20 meq potassium pills until I can go see a Nefrologist in a few weeks (long waiting list).

Other "strange" things that may be related: This milk allergy has me worried and I now also sweat ammonia... not kidding, if I take a hot shower, the towel will reek of ammonia once I am done and hang it up. Other than that, I seem to be getting sinus infections allot which may or may not be related. And I now seem to get "almost panic attacks" where I just feel tense and juiced up which sometimes causes my breathing to become irregular and I have to force myself to calm down. Sometimes I will just be driving to work and discover my shoulders are all tensed up and I am gripping the steering wheel any my whole arm is tensed up. I guess I am not textbook for anything in particular but any experienced advice would be helpful.

Active User, very eHealthy
May I ask what you are seeing the nephrologist for. Do you have kidney problems as well as the milk allergy? I am not sure. Is it because of the renin? I am sorry I am not much help. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Conn's Syndrome
I have Conn's Syndrome which I am now taking spironlactone. Headaches I can only attribute to milk but I am much better now that the aldosterone levels are under control.

Update
Hey, It has been a few months now and I have to report absolutely 0 new vascular spasm headaches... also another plus.. .Those irritating sinus congestion headaches I used to get a couple/three times a month are also gone. It seem cutting milk and milk related products out of my diet has also cured my sinus problems... almost never congested anymore and I think I have had a single sinus headache in the last 4 months (which is the longest duration of a lack of sinus issues in the last 15 years!)

I did find out that I can eat pizza without triggering an issue so it appears mozzarella cheese must lack the trigger which regular milk, american / cheddar like cheeses have. All in all it is the strangest thing but I am SO GLAD that I am cured (as long as I run away from the milk products!)

milk allergy/kidney/ammonia smell
I have a severe milk allergy that progressively got worse since I was in my teens. It started that the low fat cheeses were okay but intensified that I have 0 tolerance for anything with milk in it including lactic powder that is in medicines... recently my blood creatinine level has been elevated... I also had the ammonia smell when I got a shower... not always... but I could smell it like it was coming out of my head... currently I am having more tests done. We have kidney disease in our family... no idea what kind... but I have learned that not all doctors handle it the same... it is important that you are tested for creatinine... and EGR which is the rate that your kidneys are filtering. Your kidneys can affect your blood pressure.

Relieved
I am so relieved to know that I am not alone. I have not been to see an allergist but have had very bad headaches, kneck tension and panic attacks for over a year and have only recently figured out that this must be realted to milk. I dodn't notice it before because I was only having small quantities of dairy but when I started drinking full glasses of milk the real problems started.

Me too
I also get migraines from milk and milk products - I also get a nasty taste in the back of my mouth, a kind of post-nasal drip that tastes awful. Strangely enough, mozzarella doesn't have this effect - esp on pizza?
