Hi, I hope anyone at all can help me, especially someone who suffers from migraines.
And I mean migraines, not just bad headaches.
It is my flatmate/friend and even though she takes a preventative once a day and if one comes on and she can't take it any more she takes another pill that can usually help. But she gets them every two weeks or so and I want to know how to help her as it is driving me nuts feeling so helpless.
I know when it happens as sometimes I can hear her crying in her room and she lets me in (its dark and silent which obviously helps)
She says noise is the worst as it becomes so extreme, even little sounds.
Often she has been grabbing my legs and screaming into my lap with pain and I feel so helpless. This is after she has taken her 'wonder' pill that should have put it aside.
I do all I can, and just being there seems to help her. I get her cold compresses and do what I can like telling everyone else in the apartment to be as quiet as they can, but I don't know if what I am doing is helping as she is usually in too much agony to be able to speak.

If you are a migraine sufferer (survivor more like!) and you had someone who would do anything to help you through it, what would you want? Would stroking your hair help or make it worse? Would a CD like ocean waves played low or something like that help?

I have heard nutrition like magnesium and feverfew in strong doses help and that is where the doctor comes in. Would these have contraindications with prescribed tablets or is it common to take herbs along side them?

I just want advice on this and don't know where else to post. I just want to help her as much as I can. She is not an emotional person and to have her screaming into my lap has made me really want to do all I can to get her through these attacks

Thanks for reading, hope you can help

There are no strong medical evidences that feverfew helps in preventing migraines, but, the relation between magnesium deficiency and migraine headaches is well established.
Taking magnesium supplements or diet high in magnesium rich food, are helpful in preventing and treating migraines.
Riboflavin, a B vitamin is also beneficial.
She may visit a neurologist specialized in treating migraines and ask for reevaluation of the therapy.
It is important for her to find out which are the most common triggers for her headache.
