Q: Metrorrhagia and OPK use
asked by: DoctorQuestion on August 26th, 2008
I'm looking for some advice please or maybe just some reassurance that I'm OK.
I have been TTC since Dec 07, came off the pill after 19 years on it.
Last Thurs 21 Aug (CD17) was my expected ovulation date - I tested since the previous Monday (CD 13) and got nothing but negatives. I also noticed that I appeared to have a lack of CM which is unusual for me.
Period is due 2 Sept 2008.
CD17-expected day of my ovulation, I noticed some light brown creamy discharge and had a raging bad headache. OPK neg (AM and PM). I didn't have my usual ovulation pains now that I think back.
CD18-feeling cold, tired and headache had some light brown bleeding-only there when I wiped. OPK neg (AM and PM).
CD19-Still got that headache and deep brown blood-still not enough for a tampon, only panty liner.
CD20 - Headache still there with deep brown blood-again still not enough for a tampon, so only using panty liners.
CD21 - Very light discharge-pink tinge.

Has this been an early period? Or something else

According to your description (“light brown creamy discharge”, “ light brown bleeding”, “ Very light discharge-pink tinge”) you probably had irregular bleeding - spotting (metrorrhagia). Spotting can happen during the ovulation but it is not proof that you had ovulation. Spotting can be due to many other reasons too.

It is not clear in your case if you really have ovulations or not. Without ovulation conception is impossible. You should have used OPK every day after your last period had finished if you wanted to register the moment of the incoming ovulation. Performing OPK only on the expected ovulation day is not enough because ovulation days can vary. Detecting progesterone in the blood after the CD 21 is a proof that a woman had ovulation. You can request a progesterone examination.

You may want to consult a gynecologist about this.
