Q: Mental Fog ?

Does anyone know how long it will take to get my mind back? I am constantly confused and cannot keep a thought in my head for more than 10 seconds (e.g. I walk into the kitchen to get something, get there, and forget why I am there). I was just diagnosed and am a few days into eating six times a day, no sugar, low- glycemic, protein at every meal. Will I ever return to my previous state of mind? Thank you so much!!!

Hypoglycemia treatment includes two basic modalities:

* Immediate initial treatment to raise your blood sugar level
* Treatment of the underlying condition that's causing hypoglycemia, to prevent the condition from recurring

Has the underlying condition been diagnosed?

If the feeling your getting is a slight dizziness, almost a slight permanant sense of feeling drunk then it should take a week or 2 to clear on a strict diet.

If its a more general problem of a 'fast mind' then it could take a little longer. I still struggle with that element months on from the change (however i previously struggled with the problem when sugar was in my diet for year).

I believe its a common mental symptom with hypoglycemia and overtime you can expect to see good results, perhaps just not immediate.

Meditation or similar might be a good idea, or some councelling ensuring the counsellor has some knowledge of the effect of sugar on the brain.

Other than that make sure you eat right, sleep right and keep yourself engaged to activities to relieve the symptoms of your mind tieing itself in knots.

Good luck

Thank you for the responses! Underlying condition? No, my doctor didn't really say there was one underlying condition. My father and all of my mom's five siblings have diabetes (although not my mom)...I've spent the last twenty years not eating regularly and trying to pass sweets/junk food for meals. I knew sugar was always an issue, but it wasn't until my son was born that my body just revolted (as if to say "no more!"). I'm going back to the doctor in a month or so, shall I ask him to determine the underlying cause? (Sorry, this is all new to me!) Thanks again for your help!

Hi Davidsmommy,

You can have low blood sugar without having diabetes, but sometimes it's a sign or symptom of diabetes. In the case that it's not diabetes your health care provider will try to find the cause using laboratory tests to measure blood glucose, insulin and other chemicals that play a part in the body's use of energy. You can find more information here:
