Q: menstruation after intrauterine death

Hi there. My 32 week old daughter died in utero, and I underwent a hysterotomy (C-section). I would dearly like to fall pregnant again ASAP, but at 10 weeks after the devastating loss, I have yet to menstruate. Do the lactation-suppressing drugs or the procedure itself have any effect on menstruation? Does one wait a certain period after the procedure to try again regardless of the number of menstrual cycles? How quickly is the uterine wall able to withstand a pregnancy after 2 C-sections (have a 2.5 year old toddler)? Thanks.

if you had a hysterotomy then you no longer have a uterus to become pregnant with. Or did you use the term to describe just having a c-section?

Just to clarify:

-otomy means the act of cutting. A hysterotomy means the cutting of the uterus.

-ectomy means removal. A hysterectomy means the removal of the uterus.

I think most doctors recommend waiting at least a year before trying to conceive after a c-section, to allow the uterine incision time to heal. I'm sorry for your loss.

sorry I just misread. Sorry for the confusion.
And yes a year is recommended after a c-section.
I got pregnant 5 months after my 1st c-section and
my new placenta attached to the old uterine scar
causing me several complications.

I'm not sure about your period though.
I think every woman is different in when she will restart her cycle after childbirth.

I am so sorry for your loss. I recently had a hysterotomy due to fetal demise in my second trimester. My period returned 7 weeks post op and my doc advised me that I should wait at least 5 months before trying again. This was my first pregnancy. Your body is probably taking some time to heal as it has been through a lot and I would wait at least 6 months or so before trying again. I am going to go see my gynae just before I start trying again just so that he can check me out and give me the green light to go ahead. All the best with your recovery!
