Q: Men From Turkey
asked by: Satnin on November 19th, 2008

I've recently become involved with someone from Turkey online. We've spent several hours chatting on MSN/Skype, emails and on the phone. We plan on meeting sometime soon in the new year. I have been doing a lot of research about Turkey, their culture, etc. Just wondering if there is anything that I should be aware of, anything I should know about men from turkish men/muslim men?

I live in Macedonia at the moment, which was under Turkish rule for almost 400 years under the Ottoman empire. THere is still a significant Turkish population that lives here, and we have Turkish friends that we are close to.

The one observation that I have to make is that in Turkey, the gender roles are still fairly divided. Men leave the home. Women cook and clean and take care of the kids. This isn't always the case, and men will differ...but the belief that women have a certain role to play in the house is very strong. That's what I've noticed.

I would agree with rooteds'post.. i also live in greece and close to turkey, I am married to a Greek man that came accross as being very "up to date" but as the time passed he became more and more caveman like, with comments such as.. do you think a mother and wife should be seen going out without her husband? I am english but have been bought up with a number of cultures.. however, because of his attitude I am half way out the door.. just trying to get brave enough....
