Q: Meds for cocaine addiction

In a few weeks, assuming I get health insurance, I plan to resume working with my doctor about meds to help with my brain chemistry.

I've studied up on cocaine recovery and the brain, and I understand it will take time for my dopamine levels or system to get back in balance.

I learned about Baclofen in treatment - to help with cravings. Tried it but it didn't help I don't think so I stopped. The cravings (specifically recall...images going through my head and dreams) have slowly gone away. They aren't gone though, I never know when something might pop up.

I also tried Effexor, which I don't think was the right antidepressant for me. My Doctor is sharp, but he has no experience with helping recoverying coke-heads.

Unfortunately, it's pretty clear that brain meds like these are a crap shoot. It will take trial and error to find something that truly helps.

So my question is, does anyone have any experience to relate? My Doctor knows I'm pretty sharp and he is willing to listen to whatever ideas I have on what to try...

Wellbutrin?

I've read cocaine recovery mimics BiPolar Disorder...so the meds that work could be the same.

Here's what I want to address with meds to whatever degree possbiel: I have racing thoughts. Can't sleep sometimes. I'm depressed. My body aches. I can't focus. I feel 'tragic' and get in ruts of negative thinking that kill my motivation to be productive. I have an overall sense that 'everything is NOT ok'

Thanks

i know you posted almost a year ago, but i wanted to let you know that i have experience a lot of what you have. I used to do a lot of coke and realized it was time to clean up. the first thing i did was talk to my doc. He put me on several antidepressants to help me get out of the rut. i started on cybalta which seemed to work but coming off it sucks. i then was on welbutrin. I have been on that for 6 months now. kinda helpin, kinda not. I still have a lot of coke dreams. the doc suggested seeing a drug shrink... i still haven't. good luck tho.. hope ur still clean.

My experience
I also have had a lot of history with coke, and just about any other "upper" that is out there; and, I've been on antidepressants for years. The one I took for the longest period of time, and also happens to be very cheap because it's been out so long, is fluoxetine, which is the chemical, or generic name for, Prozac. This is one of the first ones that came out, and there is a lot of data about it. I found that it was more energizing for me, rather than making me drowsy- which I can't STAND! About a year or so ago, I finally got my degree and got a professional position that comes with wonderful benefits such as health insurance, and tried Cymbalta, because I've also battled a lot of back pain, as I've been prety hard on myself over the years. It's supposed to help with pain, too. Liked it pretty well, but am switching back to something that I can get as a generic. It's the generic Effexor. I took Effexor XR several years ago, which is both an antidepressant and antianxiety medication. I really liked it but the side effects when coming off of the medication were really awful!!! Very dramatic- as a server, it was very bothersome. Anyhow, just thougth I'd through my two sense in.
