Would my widow be responsible for my medical debt?
Yes, she'd have to pay.
No, she'd be in the clear.

Lately I have been having an increasing number of health problems. Both my wife and I are full time college students, but this year I have been struggling to stay ahead because of these health problems. We are unfortunately living in the US, so health insurance is out of the question with our income. I have been terrified to go to a doctor in case there is something serious wrong with me. My question is, if I am diagnosed with a deadly disease, and end up in a lot of debt trying to cure it, if I die, will the burden of this debt be left on my wife. There is no way I would want to do that. I wouldn't mind the debt so much if I survived and could pay it off myself, but leaving that burden on her is unthinkable to me.

Hi,

I know the feeling of having increased health problems. As it is, my medical-aid has been depleted since April this year already.

Unfortunately, as far as I know, the answer to your question, is yes. The government sees a married couple as a partnership. Any debt incurred, falls on both parties regardless of the fact that it was incurred from a joint-account or not.

I hope it's nothing serious and I wish you and your wife all of the best with your studies.
