If you're not bleeding, you're not passing out the fetus and any blood. Your abortion may not even be successful if this continues. Your experience with a medical abortion is hardly over, so don't judge prematurely. For most women the process is very painful, it's causing you to miscarry, you will bleed alot and you will experience heavy cramping as your body tries to expel the fetus. Compared to a surgical abortion, a successful medical abortion is hell on earth.

NOT bleeding is NOT good.

You need to be passing large amounts of tissue and blood, or else you will have to have a surgical abortion!

Definitely go back to your follow up appointment and make sure it was successful.

Hi.

Reptar is right, if there is no bleeding and no passing of clots then you ARE NOT passing the pregnancy. A medical abortion doesn't always work and sometimes requires a surgical abortion to complete it.

If and when a medical abortion is successful, it will be very painful with a lot of bleeding and passing of clots. How far along were/are you? A medical abortion needs to be done very early in the pregnancy.

Take Care~

My experience with a medical abortion was HORRIBLE. In fact, I recently found out I was pregnant again and feared going through that process again. I chose to have menstrual regulation, something I rarely see discussed or heard about. It's similar to surgical abortion but there's no cutting or scraping of the uterus.

This is what it involves:

"The Aspiration Procedure is the most natural way to end early pregnancy. Our doctor uses a small handheld plastic instrument that applies gentle pressure to remove the early pregnancy tissue. It doesn’t leave scars or cause damage to the uterus in any way. It used to be called Menstrual Extraction because the procedure is like “bringing down your period” The procedure is also called Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA). A speculum is inserted (like a pap smear). A local anesthetic is applied. A thin tube is inserted into the cervix. Gentle suction is applied with a handheld instrument for about 2 minutes. It is like a 3-4 minute pap smear with 2-3 minutes of period-like cramps at the end."

I had it performed and although I thought the website (private options) that discussed it was exaggerating, I found them to be 100% accurate. I would choose this procedure any day over a medical abortion.

My experience with medical abortion was negative for so many reasons. I had to be counselled for such a long time even though I'm in my 30's and knew what I wanted to do. I didn't feel guilty about my decision and adamantly stated that I wanted it out of me. But, I had to go through the process, which took in all about 3 hours. That wasn't the worse part. The pain started when I put the second set of pills in my cheeks. I started to bleed and cramp immediately. The cramping I'm sure is comparable to labor. I've always had horrible cramps (I'm talking no weaker than 800 mg motrin 3 xs per day during a period). The cramping, vomitting, sweating, and diahrea lasted about 2 hours. I was miserable. I had to "go to the bathroom" every 10 minutes. I passed huge blood clots. Weirdly enough, I was relieved every x I went to the bathroom because I knew I was closer to expelling the pregnancy with each bathroom visit.

My experience with menstrual extraction or regulation was amazing. I didn't have to be counseled. I had an ultra sound to ensure that I was pregnant. As soon as the dr came in, twilight anesthesia was administered. Only thing I remembered was something being inserted. I don't even remember the extraction part. It was over in literally 2 minutes. Maybe even 1 minute. As soon as the dr was done, the nurse told me I could leave when I was ready. I got up immediately and drove home. The cramping (not even as intense as my normal period) lasted the car ride (20 minutes). I popped two 800 mg motrin and the pain entirely subsided within 5 minutes. That was it. I maybe bled (very lightly) for 1 day. That was it. It's cheaper than a medical abortion. I think I paid $250 plus $50 for twilight anesthesia. Although I won't have to have another abortion, I would take this way any day over medical or surgical!

What YOU had was called MVA, or MANUAL VACUUM aspiration.

MANY clinics offer it for abortions under 7 weeks, you just have to look around and find someone.

Regular surgical abortion does NOT include cutting or scraping at all anyway, which is the problem with 'private options' in NY.. That claim they make is untrue.

Scraping is only needed for LATER term abortions. Suction aspiration is used alone with abortions up to 12 weeks, usually.

MVA is great.

yeah, i guess it used to be called menstrual regulation but where i went it's still called menstrual regulation. in new york they called it MWA and menstrual extraction. i don't necessarily know i'd call it "great" Very Happy but if i have to have any type of procedure to terminate pregnancy, i'd go with this one.

thanks for clearing that up about scraping. i just read what they posted on their site. i've never had a surgical abortion. didn't mean to scare anyone. those weren't my words.

I would love to know if the OP had such a great medical abortion experience once it actually began. She hasn't been back, so I don't know whether to assume she realized the error in her hasty assumption or if she really did have an easy time. I have yet to hear of a really positive experience, whereas surgical abortions are rarely that painful.

I have spoken to the clinic several times and they have assured me that most women wont pass the pregnancy straight away and that it can take up to a few weeks

Is this true? and has anyone had a failed medical abortion?

Ive lost my morning sickness and bloating and food cravings is this a good sign?

I wait for my checkup on the 17th now

Your abortion was not successful. It might be time to look into a surgical abortion.

You should have been passing blood and clots within hours of taking the pills. It does not take weeks.

You should be passing blood and clots, the clinic is lying to you. You need to find another clinic because this one certainly sounds untrustworthy. You need to pass clots and blood within hours of taking the pills for it to be successful and even then you should have get it checked afterwards. The pill is supposed to send your body into a miscarriage state and by this time, there is no trace of the pill left in your body. I agree with AyaMiyaki that you should look into a surgical abortion in which they assure that they get everything right while you're there. The procedure is shorter, much less painful, and has more of a guarantee.

NOT exactly...

Methotrexate does stop the pregnancy, which is WHY your symptoms are gone!

BUT, you NEED to actually PASS the tissue or else an infection can result.

The cytotec is supposed to cause bleeding and contractions like labor to expel the tissue.

I would consult another clinic, because that does not sound correct.

I have had 3 abortions..

I cannot use hormonal BC, so I used lesser effective 'barrier' methods.

Surgical abortion was PAINLESS thanks to IV sedation, and very easy.

SHE stated that abortion by pill was horrible, and that surgical abortion was easier.

I am a womans health RN, I work in an abortion clinic pt. You wrongly assume that she was not using contraception, she could have been using a lesser effective barrier method.

Not all women can use hormonal BC, and I see women that become pregnant despite having a tubal ligation.

Okay, let's say this one more time. NO method of birth control is 100%. Not condoms, not the pill, not the IUD, not even sterilization. Condoms and spermicide are less effective than the pill. There is no need to criticize someone because their birth control failed. She could of used the pill and the condom and still become pregnant. Look up the statistics regarding the effectiveness of any type of birth control and you'll see that even when used 100% correctly there is a chance for failure and that average use results in a lot more pregnancies.

Condoms and spermicide are not very effective...

No offense, but condoms break, and even people who use condoms perfectly are only 95% protected.

I started to bleed immediately. Literally. I put two pills on one side of my cheek and two on the other and started cramping right away and bleeding. That lasted for around 2-3 hours. I was told that if you don't bleed, it didn't work. My sister has a friend and she had little bleeding and hers worked, but she have bleeding. I hope the procedure worked for you. Have you tried taking a home pregnancy test? Only reason I ask is, although I know the pregnancy hormone can be detected in your system for weeks, I've taken two since my procedure on the 7th. I took the 1st on Thursday (3 days later) and the two pink lines were clearly visible. I took one just a minute ago and second pink line was barely visible. It seems like my hcg (is that right) levels are going down. I know my procedure worked, I'm just curious to see how long it takes to get only one line. I bought like 10 pregnancy tests. Lol. Dollar store.
