Q: Meat eaten after best before date

Just today (August 22) I made shepards pie using ground beef and adding ground pork. The ground pork had been sitting in the fridge for a week so I opened it to smell if it had gone bad, it didn't smell foul at all. I cooked the meat in a frying pan and then also transferred it to the oven for extra cooking and so the potatoes on the top would set and be stiff. The meat was cooked at a temperature that would kill any bacteria so I wasn't to concerned. Of course after we had all eaten, I noticed that the package in the garbage that had contained the ground pork said " best before August 13th, and well you do the math, it's well past that today. Now I'm really nervous that I've fed my family something potentially dangerous and feel so awful at the moment, not sick..just guilty and stupid. Nothing I can do about it now, however, I wondered if anyone has eaten ground pork or any sort of meat after it's "best before" date and lived to tell about it.

Thanks Kim

Morning honey..I would think that since you said it didn't smell bad nor taste bad that it would be ok..I know I did do this one time with beef and like you once I really looked at the package I was worried as well..No one got sick so felt very fortunate..I rarely use pork as it's not a favorite meat..

I love Shepherds pie and make it several times a year..I use buffalo sausage that has a wonderful flavor to it..It's great in just about any dish that cause s for some spice..

Hope everyone still feeling ok..k

Hey firelightglow
The best if used by date isn't magic. Your butcher can predict the future. They only make conservative estimates of when meat will go bad. Certainly check the date before using meat in the future but if the meat didn't smell sour don't worry about it until you have something to worry about. It's not like you can uneat it.

I don't think I'll be doing this again, tempting fate..but so far so good. I'm hoping that because I've cooked it once in the frying pan and then in the oven that it made a difference..I'm sure it has. Thank you for your reply's.

As far as I can remember, the expiration date of all manufactured foods are 1 month ahead to its original expiration that is posted on the product. So, since the expiration date of the canned food you bought is Aug. 22, it means that the original expiration date is Sept. 22. That 1 month adjustment is usually given by companies that manufactures foods to make sure the safety of customers. So, I think you and your family are safe aside from your observation that the food is quite okay and doesn't smell and you also cooked it that also killed bacterias.
