Q: Marijuana and lungs
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 25th, 2009
I have trouble sleeping, and I want to know how much worse smoking marijuana is on "my lungs" compared to a pair that have not been operated on? In addition, what are the lasting effects of the talc that is used to connect the lungs to the chest wall?

No data from independent medical studies can be found about the effect of marijuana on lungs after pleurodesis compared to healthy lungs.
Talc can cause pulmonary inflammation, granulation tissue formation, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Long-term problems with talc might cause decreased pulmonary function and difficult future thoracic surgery.
