Your wife sounds like she has diseased gums, not dead gums. In my opinion she's making the problem worse. They hurt because they're infected. She should go see a periodontist. Normal flossing and poking won't cure this problem because there is bacteria trapped way far down where u can't reach. Get this treated before her infection reaches her jaw and her teeth fall out!
