Was your surgery on one side? How did you feel after, did the pain start recently?

I would think it really depends on what type of pain it is. If it is more neuropathic type of pain, due to nerves being over-excited and firing too much, then this medication would act to reduce the activity of the nerve cells, and possibly pain as it is also said to reduce the release of substance P.
It's similar to Neurontin.

I personally react negatively to Lyrica.

I also think Lyrica is still only available as brand name, so another question, have you tried Neurontin? Another possibility is oxcarbazepine. All this medications are used for neuropathic type of pain. What is the condition of the TMJ now?

I had surgery on the right disc in 1991, the left disc in 1993. pain came back around 2003. I went back to my surgeon at Emory and was told that there isn't much else that can be done. he said that a 2nd surgery would be very risky. the disc on both sides in popping in and out again. when this happens, you have bone on bone contact which is what causes the pain.

Yes, bone on bone contact is not usual neuropathic pain.
It is hard to say how you might benefit from Lyrica.
I would give Neurontin a try, although it had extreme cognitive impairment affect on my mind.
