Hello,

I am a 39 year old female who is also a smoker, for the past 4 months i have had swollen lymph glands under my jaw. I went to the doctor a month ago with this and was given antibiotics.

I went back today and have been fast tracked to the hospital for a visit with a specialist ( I live in the UK usually this takes a month or more to see one) I go on the 3rd to see this specialist to have them stick a cam or whatever down my throat to see what is happening.

these knots under my chin are hard, but not painful. I have also found that i am finding it hard to hold my head up, i sometimes have to rest it back because my muscles hurts so bad, at least i think it is that. but it is to painful to hole it up.

I am concerned of course that i might have throat cancer, or something like that as my voice has gone hoarse as well. I am struggling to swallow and am constantly clearing my throat to try to get it clear sometiems when i try to swallow i just cant get my throat to cooperate with me on it, its like it gets stuck, very disturbing feeling that.

I am quite scared right now, and would like to be informed of what this could be, i know in the end i would have to wait for the diagnosis from the doc, but would like to know what it sounds like to the doctors and members here, I think it is natural to be afraid, does not help me that i have done this to myself if i do have the worst case senario.

if you have any questions that will help you with telling me about this please ask. I am just scared and want some clarity as to what is going on with me.

anyway, if anyone has any clues, or advice, or know how bad the camera thing is, please let me know.

thank you

Hello and thank you for posting your medical question on E health forum.

From the history described, it seems that you may be having laryngitis or vocal cord paralysis.

The presence of enlarged lymph nodes that are painless, could be a sign of cancer.

But the absence of weight loss, chronic cough, blood in sputum, and other major signs decrease the chances of cancer.

For the confirmation of the diagnosis a laryngoscopy and biopsy is necessary, which has been scheduled by your doctors

Though it is usual to be anxious before any test, it is essential to get tested as early diagnosis and treatment will help in curing the condition, even in case of cancers of the larynx.

In the mean time you should consider to stop smoking ASAP.

I hope this helps
