Our daughter is 25 years old and has exhibited the following behavior. She reads a story or details of an event that has happened to someone else and then claims that it has happened to her. Most of the time, the events are very traumatic or bad experiences. It there a condition that causes or contributes to this behavior? Or is it just lying? She has two children and I am concerned for her kids. She doesn't seem to be hallucinating or otherwise impaired. Is it a way to get attention? What can I do to help her and protect my grandchildren from harm?

The biggest question is whether or not she truly believes those things happened to her. Is she creating an alternate reality? When she does those things and you know it is a story that has happened to someone else, inquire further. Ask specific things to probe whether or not she truly believe it. Whether or not she believes it, she does need some help. I would go slow with her. If you do feel she truly believes those stories and has placed herself in them, then I would consider making a difficult phone call to Health and Welfare if you feel the children are in danger. That is so frightening for you. I am sorry to hear you are going through this with your daughter. I hope you get some answers soon.
