Q: Lungs feel worse when exercising

I have smoked a couple of packs a week for about 8 years and I have never felt any negative affects in this time while exercising. There were times when I had a cigarette on the way to the gym and ran 3 miles and felt fine. Now, I have no had a cigarette in 2 weeks and my lungs burn when I run. Why is it hurting now since I quit? I never had any negative affects while smoking, is it normal to start to feel them after quitting?

Hey MollyMoo. What you described is not completely unique. You may, for example, not have had much of a smoker's cough until after you quit smoking. It's part of your respiratory system's recovery process. Your body is trying to expel the crud in your lungs. The first several weeks are the most dramatic. The human body has an amazing resilience and ability to normalize itself after having been subjected to years of abuse. Congratulations on quitting!
