Q: Lump under skin on hands

I have a small lump on the palm of my skin that has gotten bigger in the past 6 or so months. There have been the same kinds of lumps come up under my skin on a few of my knuckles also. The lumps are a little painful to the touch. I was just wondering what they might be and what kind of doctor should I go to to see about it. I have been told by a friend thats a nurse that I should go to an orthopedic doctor, but just wanted to make sure.
