Q: Lump under butt crack
asked by: DoctorQuestion on May 25th, 2009
hey
about 2 weeks ago i felt a lump just under my butt crack on the left side, it seems to be smaller than before and i have used ice and hot water bottle to reduce the swelling which has worked, when i feel the lump it feels like a worm like structure beneath the lump going further down in my skin.
i am worried what it could be and would really love some feedback !

It is, of course, impossible to make a specific diagnosis over the Internet. Fortunately, most lumps and bumps in the area that you describe (especially in young people)are benign, and include abscesses (pockets of infection underneath the skin) or pilonidal cysts and sinuses(pockets under the skin which communicate with the skin surface through tiny little tunnels, or sinuses, and which often contain ingrown hairs).

You should see your physician for an examination, and for any treastment that might be required.

Sincerely/ Robert A. Wascher, MD, FACS
