Q: Lump under armpit - swollen lymph node ?

I found a lump underneath my armpit on Monday and went to the studenth health and wellness center at my college to get it checked out. The doctor did examine it and said it was kind of bad, gave me a shot, told me to come back the next day, and I did and she gave me another shot and a prescription for levaquin. I was just wondering if that's a good enough test to determine what is actually wrong with it. It has gotten a bit softer since the shots, but also a lot more painful. Is it necessary to have a blood test or should the doctor be able to tell what is wrong just by looking at it? I should probably also mention I'm diabetic and 18.

In most cases, tender masses that suddenly arise in the armpit area tend to be benign inflammatory lesions (e.g., inflamed skin cysts or reactive lymph nodes). However, if this lump persists for more than 4 to 6 weeks (and, especially, if it continues to enlarge), then a needle biopsy or excisional biopsy may be necessary to rule-out a more serious problem.
