It might be a swollen lymph node, since you were sick so recently. I would give it another week and if it is still there, go back to your regular doctor and ask to be referred either to an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor or an Endocrinologist who has experience with thyroid disorders (most mainly focus on diabetes). A lot of people have what are called "nodules" on their thyroid that are totally benign, but some do turn out to be serious, so they need to investigate all of them that they find, just in case.
The specialist will want to do an ultrasound to see if the lump is on your thyroid or not. You'll also probably have blood tests, but those don't indicate anything one way or the other except whether you have a thyroid hormone imbalance.
