Hi there
I am a 27year old female. I smoked for 8 years but gave up 3 years ago. For the last three months It has felt like there is a lump in my throat when I swallow, but it is not painful. Just annoying. The doctor said it could be reflux and left it at that. I went to another doctor a few weeks after that and he diagnosed a throat infection, and gave me 2 seperate courses of antibiotics, it hasnt really done anything though.
Now my whole neck/throat is feeling swollen and achey. I still have a lump when swallowing but some days it seems worse than others. I am scared, if this was just a throat infection the antibiotics would of fixed it by now, wouldn't they? I have an irrational fear of cancer and am scared that this is what it is.

lump in throat when swallowing
I've had the same thing for about a month now. I finally went to my doctor and he thought it was an irritation caused by post nasal drip. I had bad sinus infections when I was young, I'm almost 56 now. I usually have some drainage in the back of my throat, and alot of throat clearing I call the ahem's if you know what I mean. Anyway he gave me some nasal spray to use twice a day for 5 days and once a day at bedtime after that. It's not getting any better so far, but this morning I had some colourful lumpyish discharge which I thought might be a good thing. Still no change to the feeling in my throat, very annoying and frustrating. I don't have any other symptoms that would point to acid reflux. Any ideas anyone?

it is..
You both have one of two things. It is either Globus Hystericus, which is a stress related issue, or it is acid reflux. If it feels like someone has their hands around your throat, or there is something tight around it, then you have the first. If you feel like there is a clog in the back of your throat behind your sinuses, then it is the second. The first will go away in time, if you try not to stress too much, but it could take a while. I had it years ago, for quite a while, then it disappeared. But it comes back from time to time when I am anxious. I now have the second, and I have lived with it for 6 years now. I think you can ask the doctor about getting something for it. Hope this helps you both!
