Q: Lowering high cholesterol numbers
asked by: DoctorQuestion on November 11th, 2008
I am 35 years old, weight 155 and my total cholesterol is 770 and my triglycerides are 5,090! (I'm not kidding not 500 it is 5,090!!) I used alcohol heavily but have stopped now for 2weeks. I have started medication for my high blood pressure only. I have to see the GI speacialist before starting cholesterol meds, even though the liver ultrasound came out normal. What steps can I do to bring these numbers back to normal fast beside a good diet which I have started. How high is my riask of having a heart attack? Have you ever seen these numbers this high? the doctors at the clinic I go to could not belive there eyes!

Given the data you provided, it seems likely that you are experiencing hyperlipidemia. During hyper-lipidemia, increased blood lipids can facilitate atherosclerosis development, thus increasing the risk for several complications, one of which is heart attack. A low fat diet and cessation of alcohol intake are recommended for this condition. However, due to the very high levels of both cholesterol and triglycerides, this condition has to be treated by a doctor.
