Over a year ago I injured myself at work. My managers had me lifting things I wasn't capable of lifting and taking them off/putting them on shelves I couldn't reach.

After a while I got really tired and the one time I decided not to lift with my legs, I felt excrutiating pain shoot through my lower back. It's bothered me every day since, and it gets worse as time goes on. The pain is pretty much constant, even if I sneeze pain goes shooting through my back.

I need to see a doctor but I'm currently out of a job and, well, flat broke. Any ideas on what I did to it? How is this type of thing treated?

lower back pain
You could have a bulging disc. That is very painful and can cause that pinched nerve type of pain.

You really need to see a spine specialist; either an orthopedic surgeon that specializes in spines or a neurosurgeon that specializes in spines.

There is really no way to tell you what types of treatment are possible without knowing what is wrong.
You have to have a diagnosis first.

What you can do is try ice on the area that is hurting you. That can decrease the pain by numbing it for a bit and decrease any muscle swelling that may be going on.

If that doesn't help, then you can try moist heat on the area that hurts.

You can also try some ibuprofen to try and decrease inflammation.

Beyond that, there really isn't anything we can tell you without knowing what is wrong.
