Q: Lower back & ab injury ?

Last weekend, I was doing deadlifts, going very heavy with perfect form, and my abs were feeling really tight.. so at the end of my workout I figured i'd throw in a bit of core work.. So im doing weighted crunches, 20x20kg, 10x30kg, then I up the weight to 40kg... get to my third rep, and my abs just seized up :s.. I couldn't move at all.. and eventually i got up, but found it hard to straighten my back as my abs stayed contracted.. After that I left because my lower abdominals felt very stiff and painful.
It's been almost a week and now im getting lower back pain, and I can't tense my lower abs like I used too..
Is this just me being a pansy or could it be something serious?..
Before you say it.. I'd like to avoid going to the doctors Smile
& Would it be a good idea to continue doing exercises like deadlifts, or should I lay off them for a while?..

I think you need to relax your muscles for a little bit, and no, you aren't a pansy lol. Some muscle problems can be terribly painful, especially when your back is involved.

Here are a few things that I think are/will solve the problem.

You need to drink much more water. Keep yourself well hydrated.
You might be vitamin deficient. Taking vitamins, plus increasing your intake of potassium, magnesium, and calcium will keep your muscles healthy and flexible.

I usually find myself with muscle problems if I am deficient, and taking some magnesium and potassium softens everything right up.

If that doesn't help, then you can go to the doctor, although I do think this isn't going to be something that you will have to take to them.... Laying off the weights for a while is probably a good idea though...taking a break and letting your muscles get back to a more healthy condition by taking the above and drinking lots of water is probably the best for them.

Hiya. I drink plenty of water and take a multivitamin ZMA daily, along with eating a large quantity of healthy food, so I can't see me being deficient.
My buddy at the gym suggested it might be a hernia, which scared the ... out of me.
Thanks for the reply muminashoe(lol.. how did you come up with that one?), I shall indeed take a break from the weights, reluctantly :'(

I hope it's not a hernia too! Not something I thought of at all. My father had a hernia operation... not fun!

Heh, my name comes from the rhyme There was an old woman who lived in a shoe and had so many children she didn't know what to do. I'm 29, but I do have 6 kids ages 7 and under....the old is taking care of itself Razz
