Q: Lower abdominal pain after sex
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 12th, 2009
This question is not about me it is about my 54 year old husband. H e is have lower abdominal pain after sex. He had 3 hernias repair in 1995 and he did have an enlarged prostate about 6 years ago. He is also have pain in his lower back and is in physical ther. 2 q week for weak muscles. The pain is there for days after intercourse, and if he has intercorse 2 or 3 days in a row the day is so bad that he can not walk well. We are only having sex 1 or 2 twice a week but he really does not want to at all because of the pain. We only married a litle less then one month ago, but this as been going on for about 9 to 10 months. I am worried! Should he have a PSI test done? What could this be. He has no problems or pain when he goes to the bathroom.

The location of the hernia might have been helpful. The pain might be related to chronic inflammation of the prostate. That might explain the enlarged prostate. The prostate fluid is one of the components of the sperm. Thus, the pain appears after intercourse. You might want to make your husband visit an urologist and have a prostate exam (physical and ultrasound), sperm culture and urine culture.
As for the lower back pain, it might be worsened after intercourse simply because of the extra effort. Trying other positions in which he would have less effort might be helpful.
