Hello! recently through a blood test i found out my iron saturation levels are low. it also said my other iron levels are normal and i am not anemic. i understand what iron saturation is, but what i dont understand is what causes it to be low. i have since been eating more iron, but are the saturation levels something i can control? or does this indicate a serious health problem? thanks!

Iron deficiency that is NOT caused by anemia could be a result of:

* Chronic gastrointestinal blood loss
* Chronic heavy menstrual bleeding
* Poor absorption of iron
* Not enough dietary iron
* Pregnancy

Here's more information on serum iron, the test that you take to check levels of iron in your blood. Do any of the above reasons seem to make sense to you?

No, none of them make sense. (which is why I'm posting a question lol) I am not pregnant nor do I have heavy periods. I also do not have gastrointestinal bleeding (I got that checked out) so it must be that I have poor iron absorption -- but what exactly causes that? This is all new to me. Thanks!
