Q: Low hemoglobin count

I'm just wondering if anyone else in this forum has been told they have a low hemoglobin count?

How I found out was with a pin prick test to try and give blood at the Canadian Red Cross. My level came up 103 and that is the lowest it's ever been since I've been trying to donate. Naturally, I was refused as the count must be over 125 and I achieved that count only once.

I've been to the doctor for urine testing and blood testing as well, I'm just waiting on pins and needles for the results. Of course, I'm thinking the worst, you know, the " what if I have cancer"? Well I know I'll deal with what comes up but I can't help but look for support in the mean time. I'm reading on the net that there are a lot of possible reasons for anemia so I'm hoping for the simple version. Any stories, support or comments will suffice in the mean time while I wait and stew. I know I shouldn't but that's me.

For women, anemia can be caused by something as simple as menstruation. I think you are taking a giant leap to automatically assume cancer. Also, anemia is easily treated with diet and/ or vitamin supplements that are rich in iron, folic acid or B-12.
My sister has menstruation problems (periods that last for weeks, sometimes months at a time) and has had anemia. But it is controlled by a proper diet and iron supplement. And I tend to have a heavy flow during that time of the month and become a little anemic as well.
Anemia can be caused by other things such as cancer or kidney disease but it is usually not a sign of serious illness.

Thankyou for your reply..I suppose because I'm almost 51 years old that I'm thinking the worst now. My periods only last 3 days at the most with one of them being very heavy, so it could possibly be that. I'm still waiting on those blood tests and in the mean time have a script for iron supplement.

I give blood whenever possible and I was turned away for the same reason. But I had a history of anemia during and shortly after my periods so I knew what the culprit was. I think it's great that you care enough to give!
Good luck.

The last time I tried to give blood I was turned down to for anemia. It seems to come and go with me. I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's quite common.
