Low dose antidepressants

Has anyone taken low dose antidepressants for TMJ pain? My maxfax surgeon suggested I take low dose Cipramil but I am not taking it yet as I am going to see a neuromuscular dentist next week to make a splint. I currently take codeine for pain.

I find most OS go for pharmacologic interventions before anything. It would be best to go with a tricyclic antidepressant if you go that route. ( Amitriptylene or Nortriptylene) as they have been shown to decrease the number of bruxism events. However, it is only a short term solution, and probably only a go if you're having sleep issues also.

I take it he thinks you are bruxing excessively at night ?

Be cautious of these medications....Once you enter the world of codeine and anti-depressants, you can, could and possibly will find yourself facing a new battle in life....The problem being, these are small aches and pains....What happens when the big ones come along?....Take care...

When my TMJ was first diagnosed I had relief of my pain with Elavil/Amitriptyline taken at bedtime. It took up to 50 mg for it to be effective. Then there were side effects of making my dry eyes worse, dry mouth, hunger, weight gain etc. It seems the Elavil reduced my nighttime clenching and the pain that resulted from that. After I got a deprogrammer splint, my bite shifted and since then the Elavil no longer works for me.
