Hi, NavyDave here, back from the pain Management clinic.

So far, in the last 12 weeks, I've been prescribed:

Vicodin 5-500, (Hydrocodone 5mg Acetominphen 500mg) 1 tab 4-6hrs

Flexoril
Naproxen 500

Percocet 5/375 (OxyCodone 5mg / Acetominophen 375) 1 tab 4-6hrs

Percocet 5/375 (OxyCodone 5mg / Acetominophen 375) 3 tab every 6hrs

and now:
Morphine Sulphate (time release) 15mg 2x / day with
Neurotonin (generic gabupentin) titrating up; currently 300mg/day, increasing to 1800 mg/day over 3-4 weeks)

The morphine is working a bit; taking the pain down to about a level 5-6.

Just wondering what other drugs you have tried which seem to give the best relief specifically for low-back / sciatica pain.

I'm really looking forward to my Neurosurgery appointment in two weeks.

Best,
NavyDave

What will you discuss during your appointment? DO you know your treatment options. I get a little nervous when I see that morphine is prescribed, especially because it is a HIGHLY ADDICTIVE drug.

Dave, I was thinking the same thing as rooted about the morphine given to you.

If your pain is coming from nerve pain, narcotics will only provide you with minimal pain relief.
The neurontin should help you far more with the nerve pain and provide you relief as it starts to work.

Take the time needed to increase the neurontin over the next couple of weeks. You may fined that you won't need to increase to the 1800mg dose to find relief.

One suggestion I would have with the neurontin is to take it at the same time everyday. It has, what is called a short half life. That means that the drug is excreted from the body quickly and dose not stay with an active level in the body.
Taking the neurontin at about the same time every day keeps the level of neurontin in the body at all times.

Be sure to have a list of questions for the neurosurgeon before you go. Write down everything that he says about your diagnosis and ask as many questions about what he says as you can.

It's also a good idea to bring someone with you to the appointment so that he/she can hear everything that is said as well and ask any questions that you didnt' think of.

Good luck and let us know what the neurosurgeon says.

Drugs won't do anything unless you're helping them to relieve your pain. What I mean is, pain meds are only going to mask the pain, not resolve it. What are you doing to help relieve the pain in your body? Are you laying down, feet up, heating pad, stretching your leg with the pain, etc? Are you constantly sitting? If you're not taking the right measures, all the pain meds in the world aren't going to help you.
