ammonia odor?
After a high fever and flu, I (still a little stuffy) can not taste ANYTHING beyond salt, and all I can smell is faint ammonia... almost like old pee... which is gross. onions smell like pee, soup-pee, potatoes-pee, ketchup-pee.... anything with any smell at all, the only part my brain is getting is the ammonia part. TOTALLY GROSS. I'm sitting in my kitchen, and am disgusted by whatever it is that I'm smelling. I have to go wash all the dishes, the counter and scrub the floor to (hopefully) get rid of the smell. I can't EAT, I am so grossed out. Does anyone else have this part of it?

I'm Amazed
I've never even heard of someone losing their sense of smell & taste. I'm into my 2nd sinus infection in less than a month. with this one I have lost ALL sense of smell AND taste. ( The ONLY advantage is I don't smell the little ones dirty diapers.) I've only been without smell & taste for 5 days now. I have noticed that I keep asking my partner to repeat things. I guess my hearing is also somewhat disturbed, not too badly.
After reading these posts on here I am wondering if I will ever smell or taste again.
One the brighter side, I have stopped snacking late at night, because I don't enjoy food at all anymore. I never realized what an impact taste & smell have on my life. As of right now, food is only a neccessity not a pleasure anymore. I hope everyone will keep psoting updates. As there really isn't too much out there about this.
*** I am going to contact a my daughters ENT and ask his "opinion".****I will do my best to keep everyone updated as well. Sorry this is so long.

No Smell & No Taste
Hello Everyone,

I am over-whelmed & saddened to hear about everything everyone is going through. I experienced that as well. I had the worst flu of my life. My temperature was 104 degrees. It was horrible! After the doctor gave me this cough medicine & antibiotics, the fever left me. But I still had congestion on my chest that I could hear when I breathed out. I don't know if I lost the smell/taste by blowing my nose so hard to get all that crap out. I thought maybe I damaged the nerves in the nasal passages that carries the message to the brain to taste & small. I noticed the disorder about a month after going back to work & I put my perfume on & didn't smell anything. I went around my house sniffing everything. I was shocked! I can smell paint & anything strong, but there's a lot I can't smell. But whatever it is, I want them back! I have an appt with my ENT next week & we'll see how that goes. Right now I've purchased an inhaler from the health food store. It has essential oils like peppermint & eucalyptus. It's really strong & my nose is very sensitive to this. I also got a bottle of concentrated oil. I put it in hot water & put a towel over my head & inhale. There is some improvement, but I'm not 100% yet. The other day I went into the restroom at work & observed a bad odor. I had to hold my breath (LOL- u know what I mean). But guess what, I'm happy, because that's a sign that something is happening. Don't give up guys, think positive. I'm also into Yoga & I try to apply the Law of Attraction. I think about what I want & not what's wrong: I try not to think about "I can't taste or smell" because that's what I'll attract more of. I focus & meditate on what I want, I believe & one day it WILL manifest! Be patient & things WILL happen. Our minds are more powerful than we think. I will post future messages of my progress

No Taste or Smell
Today was my 1st appt with the ENT doctor. He didn't see any polyps in my nose & my ear & throat were all clear. He gave me Astepro & Nosonex nasal sprays. He said my loss of taste/smell is due to the influenza/flu/bronchitis I had in February. I must say I'm very skeptical about taking these "drugs" since I'm a health freak & don't like toxins in my body. So at this point, I'll have to decide what to do. The doctor was very optimistic about the taste & smell returning. He said it could be a month or two or several months. Either way, I have no other choice than to be optimistic as well. I've never put anything up my nose before, not even salt water, but not having my taste buds or smell working, I may have to make a sacrifice & take the meds. I could always detox later on. Well for now, I'll be back on again to give an update.

loss of taste and smell
For some unkown reason which 2 doctors still dont know...I lost my sense of smell which along with it also came loss of taste. They were hopeful it would return but is going on a year now. I regained some but what I did regain is greatly distorted. I am unable to eat anything which does not taste disgusting and the smells i do smell are also disgusting. I have become severly depressed because of this and dont know what to do. I am going back to the original ENT on Tuesday april 14 and am hoping more tests can be run. I would rather not be able to taste or smell anything than to live with the greatly distorted smells and taste I do have. I just need someone to talk to who is going through this too. Thanks for any help.

I am going through this too. It has been maybe 9-10 months, and it is starting to bother me more than ever. I agree, I would rather not taste or smell at all than these phantom tastes and smells. Then I'd atlwast be able to eat food! All I can drink is water milk and tea, for now. That will probably change. It is very frustrating, trying to eat and getting these unbearable tastes. It got to the point where I'd cry once I found another thing I couldn't eat. But now I just can't eat anything at all. To top it off, I'm pregnant now!!

antibiotics/loss of smell &taste
same here... antibiotics sorted out probably the worst flu I've experienced - smell and taste lost during the bout of flu and have not returned - its been five weeks and it is distressing... I'm grieving for my montecristo's and glass of taylors.

No Taste or Smell
It's been 3 months now & it's still not back. However, if I put something real close to my nose, I get a slight essence, but not 100%.

I had a BAD head and chest cold for about a month and am still recovering from it. I lost my sense of smell and taste somewhere in the mess, and it doesn't seem to be returning. The only thing I took was an antibiotic for sinus infection, and over-the-counter cold meds. I can't smell or taste anything! I used to love aromatherapy and nice smells in my home or nature and now it's gone. I'm very sad about it and I hope and pray both senses return. Anyone who can shed light on the matter would be appreciated.

Another in this boat
I had a mild case of bronchitis about a month ago the left inner ear swelled up also. I went on antibiotics and its gone now but most things still taste like dust, I don't know how better to describe it. Its not like dirt with the minerals and moisture, just table top dust. Ive had a similar case of bronchitis before but it didn't effect my ear or senses it was in a dryer environment too which could have some bearing on symptoms. I have noticed my senses slowly returning but at a very displeasing rate. If your healthy I suggest going on walks or runs in a coolish environment, drink lots of water and try to get a runny nose so the snot can wash out the sinuses. At the same time this could make it worse by triggering a cold again. Just a hunch but it would make sense(hehe pun) that it's the dead/weak bacteria lingering in the mucus distorting what the enzymes are tasting and smelling. Also try washing your bed sheets for some reason this helped me a lot but they were pretty due for a cleaning.

I have the same symptoms
I had a very bad case of bronchitis. I finally went to the doctor after a week or so. I felt like I had been hit by a bus. The doctor gave me ZPak and Adavair. I was allergic to the inhaler. It made my tongue turn beet red and peel off. The ZPak got rid of the infection but my taste and smell were gone and never came back. I can taste sour, sweet, salty or bitter, but cannot distinquish flavors. As others said, As long as I am in bed, I can almost smell coffee brewing in the morning but when I pour a cup, it taste like chemicals. I smelled my sister's perfume just very faintly and it almost irritated my nose. It was very unpleasant. I am getting very depressed also. My heart is breaking for you that are suffering. I understand completely and like you, I am desperate for an answer.

my wife just lost her taste buds
She can only taste salt. She just visited a ENT and they are running some tests She had a bad flew in Feb. She also did a lot of painting that had Benzene. Not sure what has caused this but I lean toward the flue. Please keep me posted on this if anyone gets better. I am very worried for her as she is a true Foodie. I hope it comes back. Meanwhile I will check in to see if anyone gets better and a possible solution. Thank you for sharing.

loss of taste/smell
I've had bad cold for one & 1/2 wks now - lost my taste & smell 2 days ago. I have NOT gone to MD because a friend DID go, went thru 3 Z-paks and STILL HAS THE COLD and blocked ears!
So obviously, this is a virus.
It is about impossible to use a neti pot with all the congestion, but I try to use it in a hot morning shower + take lots of vitamin C and eat red grapefruit, also drink hot liquids often, hoping my immune system will fight it off.
If fever gets high, I will visit doc, but so far, it's just a bad cold and I'm able to clear out the congestion fairly well.
Let's keep sharing - I also continue to walk some, to get deep breaths and fresh air.

taste/smell better
OK - my second report - I have now 90% recovered from this bad cold, after 2-1/2 weeks.
This cold, bronchitis, sinusitis has been going around the town here and so many folks are getting antibiotics, so if you think you have this, let me tell you, IT IS A VIRUS.
I did get the secondary sinusitis with the green globs and terrible congestion, not too much chest congestion - if you get that, antibiotics may be needed. I feel like I have blown the volume of my head out several hundred times.
After finally buckling down & taking regular, 2-3 times a day, 1000 mg of vitamin C and drinking lots of hot liquids, hot showers with neti pot in mornings, I have finally beat this.
Also, I walk about a mile every morning.
Stay away from the docs if you can, but be aware that a high fever may indicate serious infection. But the misery is just a part of the body fighting for you and you will need to be PATIENT and diligent with the vit C.
AND my taste & smell are starting to return!

lauracb, your symptoms are quite short lived & that is good, & yes vit C & walking & what you are doing is great but some of these people have had this taste & smell thing for months & me years, mine has improved & the way i have achieved this is through a liver detox, alkalizing diet, hydration & mineralizing balance. There is no such thing as amiracle cure but for returning our bodies to a pre sickness state takes time.
the minerals will help replentish once we have cleansed the toxins from within!

I had the flu in March 09..I took Cipro on day 12. I was showing signs of bacterial infection..after the cipro I recovered quickly..I couldn't taste or smell that well..weeks went by and realized I could not taste or smell pretty much at all. I work in the OR with ENT's and three of them said I would NOT probably get them back since it has been so long..It has been 3 months now and It can be very disturbing but I am trying to think positive...maybe this will help keep my weight down.

Can somebody tell me if this is normal and if it has happened to you before? I can taste sweet, salty, and spicy but coffee smells, almost fishy, and cigarette smoke smells like burning hair??? I am annoyed and desperate, and frankly, a little scared!

****Hello, today I saw an article on CNN: check this out. They said Zicam causes Anosmia (permanent or long-term loss of smell). I don't recall if I took this back in February. But it's been 4 months now since I lost it after the flue & it has not been restored. I'm not giving up. I'm just more inclined to stay away from some of these meds. I asked my MD if he thought the meds caused this & he said no.

ASTEPRO LOSS OF SMELL AND TAISTE
**********Astepro********

Two days ago I was perfectly fine with the exception of a little sinus congestun. I took a few squirts of my wife's Astepro Nasal Spray in the morning and some more two hours befor bed. Immediately following the drainage sesson brought on by the medicine, my smell began to deminish. It has been two days without smell or taiste. I am convinced that this medicine has done this to me. I went to the doctor and they said I should wait a few days to give the medicine time to work it's way out of my system. Has anybody else had this problem?

cant taste or smell anything either.
I'm experiencing the same thing. Last week wed I started feeling stuffy, blowing my nose. Then Friday Saturday my head and around my nose felt like it was going to explode. I took afrin, musinex, and clariton. Since I took the afrin I began to slowly loose taste and smell. Its been about 5 days and little progress. I thought I was developing allergies or had a sinus infection and just got back from the doc. He said I just have a cold and a lot of mucus. I haven't been blowing my nose as much but he said if its still the same in a week or two to come back. I think I am going to go get a second opinion. This isn't normal to me. I haven't had a cold in 2 or 3 years and when I did. It lasted maybe 3 days and during the cold I can still smell and taste. Idk what this is or maybe the meds are too strong. I almost just don't want to take anything and just deal w it. Just to see if it was the med or I am just that congested with mucus.
