Q: Loss of an eye

My good friend was recently in an accident where he was hit in the eye with a cellphone. The doctor told him that his eye basically exploded, and after examination in the emergency room that their was nothing that could be done due to serious damage. Was wondering if anyone on the forum, or a doctor, has any experience with this kind of injury. My friend has to go in tomorrow to remove the eye completely. I know nothing about this, and he is quite freaked about it also.
Has anyone here ever lost an eye, and what are the implications thereafter? What about and when can he get a prosthetic eye? Unfortunately, I cannot go with him to the hospital tomorrow, so I cannot be there to ask question, and have instructed him to get as much information as possible. Just wondering if anyone here has any insight at all?

Thanks, LEO

Has he considered a second opinion or must the eye be removed right away?

Honestly, if if I was him...I would get a second opinion before anything is removed...

eye removal
Well, he did not get a second opinion, they told him that it was too damaged to repair and that it should come out as soon as possible. It has been a week now, he has NO sight in this eye, has finally stopped draining and swelling has reduced, but if it is that bad, I don't know because I wasn't with him when it happened. I told him when he goes in tomorrow to ask again if their is no hope for any kind of repair before they actually remove it. Personally I would like to see him get another opinion also, but he has limited resources and now no income as his livelihood has been taken away too.

eye removal
last summer my husband was shot in the eye by a paintball gun 25 feet away he went to the e.r, imediatly and the next day they sent him to a eye specailest and that night he went into emergency surgery because there was a tear in the eye and they thought the eye had ruptured and would need to be removed. luckily it did not rupture, it had blew and damaged alot of the veins in the back of his eye and tore his retena, and caused a hole in the optical crevase, he did not have to loose his eye but he is now legally blind in that eye. your friend should get a second opinion! i cant believe a cell phone could cause that much damage compared to the damage my husband eye took getting shot by a paintball gun on full blast!!

eye loss
Well, after he went to doctors on Tuesday, they decided to wait a while longer to see if any sight returned. It would be great if it did, but with the amount of damage TWO different doctors think it cannot be saved. They explained also that the immune system may attack the healthy eye in response to the injured one, so it's now a wait and see and monitor the good eye closely. No other news except that, but he will go back next Tuesday for re evaluation...
