I have been suffering from gout now for about three years. I tried Allupuronal (sp?) but had some nasty side-affects.

I average an attack per month (ranging in severity).

My doctor decided to take a "re-active" approach, which seemed to help. Anytime I feel an attack coming on, I take Predisone (25mg) and Colchicine. I'll take the Colchicine every hour until the pain subsides. For the past year--it has worked well. I still get an attack each month, but they last for only a few hours.

However . . . I am in the midst of a vicious attack that has lasted for 10 days (and going). This one is a first, as it is actually in the ball of my big toe. I normally get them in the upper joint of big toe, or on the side of the foot, or index finger.

I have been taking Predisone, Indomethacin, and Colchicine during this attack. The pain is about a 4 on a 1-10 scale, so it is "bearable", but still painful, and I limp slightly. I am sure the drugs are fighting it off, but geez I cannot believe how long it is lasting.

Just curious what your longest attack has been.

Acute pain went away after about 3-4 weeks. minor pain in about 2 more. At this point just have not been able to get ride of the blasted god awfull inflamation which makes it uncomfortable. Was put on celebrex which helped get me on my feet and did nothing for the inflamation. Doc was considering water pills but did not want to trigger another attack.

Make sure that you don't have sleep apnea. If you do, overcoming it will probably cure your gout. It will also greatly reduce your risk for developing much more serious life-threatening diseases.
