It's not often I cry out to others for help but I need to right now. I have a long term injury to my lower back *L5-SI area of the left side lower back. That pain was more or less under control for 3 years and I was functional, but needed painkillers occasionally to get me through the day. The problem is, 5 days ago I was lifting a light box and I fet an awful sensation of a tearing, slipping, pullin, tugging feeling in that area of my back. It was excruciating. And the pain it left me in has not subsided. I went to emergency and they did some simple test in which they poked my toes on my left foot and tested relexes. I asked for an MRI but they would not give me one. They sent me home with painkillers. The painkillers do nothing for this pain. 2 days later I went back to emerg and begged for an MRI. I was in a wheelchair looking all pathetic. Still they did give me one and gave me Torodil (anti-inflammatories). Now this is day 5 and I cannot sit, walk ot do anythhing without pain. The pain is most intense when I put my left leg forward, as if to take a step. It's a shooting pain through my lower left back. Totally intolerable. I don't have pain down either of my legs, although there is a slight tingling occasionally in my left leg and foot. I need to know what I have done. Did I rupture the disc, did I tear a muscle or pull a ligament or all of the above? If anyone has any ideas of my sympstoms I will be eternally grateful. It hurts so much even just to sit at my computer. The only position which gives some relief is lying on my right side.

Before this injury, I had seen every specialist available and no one could tell me what was wrong. My previous X-rays were normal and my previous MRI showed 'mild posterior disc bulge associated with shallow left paracentral disc protrusion encroaching upon the lateral recess and neural foramen. Mild disc degeneration at L5 S1. There are also bilateral inferior osteophytes contributing to bilateral foraminal stenosis, worse on the left'. So that was my previous diagnosis, but no one could tell me where the pain was coming from. Regardless, that pain I could live with. This new pain I cannot. Please help!

long term injury L5-SI
Sounds like you pushed disc material into the left L5 neural foramen irritating that nerve root. Rest and anti-inflammatories for now. Last time that happened to me two weeks on my back. Had laminectomy L5/S1 right and same on L4/L5 left 3/06. I still have foot and toe numbness with nerve pain that reminds me of finger nails on a chaulk board. Better but not like new. Good Luck.

I would suggest that you see another spine surgeon for a new evaluation. It is possible that you still have nerve compression from the disc in the lateral recess of both vertebrae that you had laminectomies on.

The most common reason for failed spinal surgery for decompression is the lack of decompression of the lateral articulate area of the vertebrae.

This had been a known problem since 1980, yet is still to this day, the main reason for failed spinal decompression.

Good luck

What have the doctors said is the cause of the pain you have?

Have you had more than one opinion from a spine surgeon as to what is causing your pain?

Surgery may or may not provide you with relief, it would depend on what your diagnosis is.

Please read my article. Mild Radiculopathy. I have similar symptoms but mine is the right side. They say its mild nerve damage. Nerve damage is nerve damage right?

L5 S1
If doctors are not finding cause they may need to look lower - google symtomatic tarlov cyst - also tarlov cyst disease foundation.
Many undiagnosed for long periods - L5 S1 can reherniate all tied to Tarlov's.

hi i am new here and like you have continual pain from L5/s1 and pain management put me on durogesic patches along with voltarol for inflammation.i am waiting to see a specialist again as after a year on the morphine its doing no good and can,t risk increasing the dosage because of side effects.
im hoping for spinal injections or some way of freezing my damaged disc just to be pain free.
i find this site very helpful as i have discovered things that others have had done with similar problems to myself. i also need to accept that what worked on them is not an option for me but at least i know im not alone.
i shall be keeping this site updated with any progress or change through medication to reach out for a bit of hope for you and others like us.
its a cursed pain from hell and both my legs are affected but there must be something and in pain or not i will keep going till i find it.
good luck i know how hard it is but try stay positive.
