justynaa,

A continuous cough for that long needs to be evaluated by a physician. Though most are do to some type of irritation to the throat, there are some significant causes that need to be ruled out, such as a tumor. Throat cancer is rare, but it is something that need to be checked for. If you are a smoker or work in certain occupations (where there are a lot of irritants in the air), the chances go up. If you are coughing up blood, that is really significant.

Again, it is most likely due to inflammation or other local irritant, but a cough that has been going on for four months needs to be checked by a physician.

Good luck.

Does your cough start in the evening? Do you need to cough for a long time 'trying to cough up'somethingh in your lungs?

justynaa,

Again, a continuous cough, even if it is not productive, needs to be evaluated.

There are just so many different possibilities that could be causing it, they all cannot be listed here.

Nonproductive coughs are usually due to an irritation of the airways of some type. But, again, there are many causes. The only way to know for sure what is causing the cough is to have it evaluated by a physician.

Good luck.
