A person with PCOS does not ovulate with every cycle which leads to an imbalance in the hormones produced by the ovaries. This imbalance can often show up in one of 2 ways. Either you don't have bleeding at all or you can have heavy or prolonged cycles.
Birth control pills can give you a regular cycle. It can also help you from having some of the bad effects of prolonged hormone imbalance. There are types of pills that you can take which can help you but only give you a period every 3 months (seasonique/jolessa). The Mirena IUD can also help with the effects of the imbalance on the uterus while keeping the periods less in amount if not stopping them altogether.
Taking birth control pills for a few days only will just cause you to bleed more. Don't do it. You can take the pills as prescribed (for the entire pack) to get the bleeding under control and then see if you can discontinue it.
Most important thing is to discuss your desires with your doctor. There are a lot of ways they can help you to meet many of your desires. You can bring up some of these ideas I mentioned in your discussion.
