My husband has had complete kidney failure for about a year and a half now. I volunteered to donate my kidney to him because we are a perfect match ( same blood type and tissue testing). I know that he can die from kidney failure and although he is on dialysis , he is in dire need of a kidney.

I suppose that I am a bit frightened of complications or worse yet, dying on the operating table. Please do not get me wrong. I want to give him my kidney because I love him very deeply. But, for some reason I keep thinking about how I might die during the surgery. My family members say this is because my brother in law recently passed away suddenly from a massive heart attack.

What are the actual chances of dying during a living donor transplant? What causes the death during this type of transplant?

Don't do it
my niece donated a kidney to her cousin ( my nephew). All went well and he is doing great. Her life is a diaster. They cliped her pancreas in the surgery and she was rehospitalized for 91 days- surgery and infections. She returned home to develop and unexplained seizure disorder. 5 years later we now know they also clips muscles to her colon so her bowels will no longer work. Every day is a struggle-36 years old. Her life is in and out of the hospital. He is fine. All of this due to a sloopy surgeon who is now retired.

Kidney Donation
I donated my kidney to my 12 year old daughter March 2009.
The difference to her quality of life is amazing, it's the most selfless thing you can do.

God Bless On You Donating A Kidney To Your Husband
My Husband donated a kidney to his dad on Dec 18, 2007 when my husband was 40 years old. His dad is in his 60's and was on dialysis for a year and a half. His dad is doing very well now and his new kidney has made his life a lot easier. No more dialysis three times a week and he is able to work his full 40 hours a week at work now. Before the surgery my husband was in perfect health. Now he has pain in his right side that works it way to his lower back right side. This all has been tough and difficult for my husband. A few months after the surgery his dad started mistreating him and me. Now his dad won't talk to him and has his mother not talking to us either. We don't understand why. This has a mental affect on my husband deeply and has kept me up many nights comforting him. My husband feel very betrayed and feel like he was used. My husband cannot get health insurance because him donating a kidney is a pre-existing condition. No one in our families can afford to help us with medical so there fore we can only do the very best we can and we are scared. God bless you for wanting to help your husband. Believe me I would do the same thing for mines. I hope you have a good health insurance policy that will insure you still once you donate. As with any surgery it's a chance you take on life. God bless you and your husband and I wish you both the best of life and health.

My dad's been on dialysis for about 5 years now, he's 65 and i can see slowly he's getting worse, i'm 29 and just finished having the tests to donate my kidney to my dad which are all perfect, i'm also getting married in 8 1/2 months. I'm so scared about having this operation, but on the other hand i'm saving my dad. My dad and i will be getting the date next month and the operation should be taking replace in feb. Which i hope i'd be fit enough to arrange my wedding in july. I'm also worried about if donating will cause any problem as i'm hoping to start a family after my wedding.
