Q: liver function numbers

I had a routine checkup last November and because my liver gpt alt number was 96 I was told to come back in 6 months and repeat the blood test. I was told the normal range is between 21-72. He did say, however, this was "normal elevation."
I don't know what this means. What do the numbers stand for? Is is something to do with cyrhosis? I was told that all my other blood work came out normal. I'm sure I don't have hepatitis. I did drink a fair amount in college and do have a few beers now and again socially, has it caught up to me?? What do these numbers mean and the fact that he asked me to come back in 6 months- does that mean I can improve the number?? Does he want me to test my blood again to see if it was a fluke?
Thank you
Scott
