Q: Likelihood of gastritis
asked by: DoctorQuestion on April 22nd, 2009
For the past two 1/2 months I have been experiencing heartburn. It is consistently in late afternoon from about 4pm-bedtime. I have difficulty eating supper. I get a feeling of fullness when i have had even 1/2 serving. I also have been having an increase in gas, burping and flatulence. My bowel movements have change.d More acidic, not as easily passed but not hard. And quite odouress.. no blood. I'm taking prescribed famoditine 20mg OD and it's not working well. I have lost about 8lbs. Nothing else I can think of saying. Every other BM i can get quite cramped and it can be very painful.. lower quadrant mostly. Any ideas of what I could be suffering from besides jsut acid reflux?

Given the data you provided, it is possible that you might be experiencing chronic inflammation of the stomach. Gastritis or chronic inflammation of the stomach might be caused by increased production of peptic acid. One particular type of bacteria called Helicobacter pylori might be another cause for the inflammation.

You might want to test yourself for presence of Helicobacter pylori over the upper limit. If the results are positive, then medications including antibiotics might be recommended to treat the condition.

As for the cramps and the increased bowel movement, there is a possibility that there is a disorder of the intestinal bacterial flora, which has led to inflammation. A stool culture might be helpful.
