I was really silly the other night and had unprotected sex. Now I'm worrying that I've caught something, especially HIV. I live in the UK and was just wondering how likely it is I've caught it. Getting a std check tomorrow. I am aware also that HIV doesn't show to at least 3 months so need some answer to rest my mind. I hadn't had sex in a year til I had sex there so a bit uncomfortable. Not pain. Is this normal? Had a bit of brown discharge when I wiped aswell. Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi,

Welcome to the ehealthforum. I am glad to help you out. Even if you hadn’t had sex for 1 year, it doesn’t mean it’ll lead to some pain while doing it after a long gap. It does take some time for the HIV test to be done as in this test the antibodies is detected and they take some time to develop in the body. Most people develop detectable HIV antibodies within 6 to 12 weeks of infection. A negative test at three months will almost always mean a person is not infected with HIV. There’s another test called the PCR test.

A PCR test (Polymerase Chain Reaction test) can detect the genetic material of HIV rather than the antibodies to the virus, and so can identify HIV in the blood within two or three weeks of infection. Please do consult an infectious disease specialist for the same. I sincerely hope this information helps. Take care.
