Hi, I'm 21 years old and I've had this pesky fibroid since I was about 12 or 13. For the first 4 to 6 years it was bearable and small enough that nothing had to be done about it -- was put on birth control to control the bleeding, and got 2 ultrasounds a year. In 2009 my iron levels and hemoglobin were fine. We were looking into treatments and then this past May I found out that it had almost doubled in size. It is 15cm x 12cm x 15cm. In July I was hospitalized for extreme loss of blood.

(My hemoglobin was at 68 at it's lowest... another 8 points and I would have had to have a transfusion. My iron was at 3...regular is 13 - 300. I needed IV iron treatments.)

Now, I have no other choice but to have a hysterectomy and I'm just curious about some things.

What is sex like afterwards? I know I have to wait like a minimum of 6 weeks... but my sex life is very poor due to horrendous pain during intercourse.

What are orgasms like? I've heard that it's different without a uterus...??

I'm also not sure what kind of hysterectomy...I'm fairly certain they want to leave my cervix alone, and they are going to try their best to save my ovaries.

The problem is the incision is going to be from my breastbone down to my bikini line, because the damn thing is so huge.

Anyway I'm just nervous and really quite curious about what I can expect for pain, hormones, and sex.. thank you Smile

Hi AvelanaMarie and welcome to ehealth: The Hysterectomy really isn't as bad as you may think...When I had mine I found the incision was the sore spot...They used staples with me...After it was over and in the hospital, they put a heat lamp on my stomach to help heal it...I was in the hospital five days...Couldn't push a vacuum for 6 weeks so I really got babied...I was stitched from the navel to as far as they could go without centering me...Sure it was sore, but it was just part of life...

I, too, had the blood problem...Had to build it up with iron pills for two months before I had enough for the surgery...I had a very large fibroid...I had been losing all this blood for months during my period...This shocked me when during a physical they did blood work and found I was dangerously low...Then they worried it could be my kidneys so I went through multiple tests before my surgery....

What was our sex life after surgery?..Awesome...I never thought twice about it...Just had fun...Actually it felt better as my OB-GYN replaced my cervix along with taking out the Uterus and ovaries...He told me sex must have hurt as my cervix and Uterus were both tilted... He was right...We now had a straight in shot instead of his hitting me at the end....

I'm not sure about other women's orgasms, but mine are were and hopefully always will be, wonderful...So wonderful that I started ejaculating about 9 years ago...This happened from the stimulation to my g-spot when I was helping my husband (he didn't know it) and turning him around and off Viagra....It worked too!!!...

Not to worry....You will do great...I send you my best wishes...Take care...

Thank you so much for your reply. I know I'll be fine, im just very curious about the sex life. I've read that it either gets much better or the sex drive dies even more! Yikes.

I'm curious, has your scar faded at all or do you use a cream or oil at all? I'll be looking my best afterwards and actually be able to fit into a bikini, but i know the scar is going to be huge haha.

Oh well. Thank you again =) can't wait to get this thing out of me - i might scream if i get asked again when my baby is due!!

Sex life is perfect. I'm 38 years old and I had a total hysterectomy less than 4 months ago. I had mine done laparoscopic and you can't even see the 4 little tinny scars on my belly. The sex is great because we don't have to worry about anything and even if I may be a little dry in the beginning it really makes it more exciting for my husband because its like breaking my virginity.............and orgasm is its great too. Goodluck

Hi again: My scar is still there and very ugly...But, mine was done over 20 years ago when they never were as careful as they are now...Nowadays, they are difficult to find...I am sure if you speak with your surgeon that he/she will be careful...Then there are doctors who repair any overlap and make it look great...Honey, you will look and be fine.....Any questions you may have later, please don't hesitate to ask...If you need to PM me I will answer you...My best to you....

Pregnancy after partial hysterectomy
I was wondering after a partial hysterectomy if you could still have a baby through invitro fertilization? I had one over 6 years ago and now am thinking I would like to have another child. Just trying to get more info from different sources. Thanks in advance for all info/advice.Smile
