Q: LH surge on Nuva Ring ?
asked by: lasawyer on May 27th, 2008

We are trying to conceive and I recently went off of the Nuva Ring. I have been on the Nuva Ring for approx 3 yrs, with only a few months off every once in awhile. Prior to that I had been on the pill for approx 5 yrs.

I bought an OPK, and Friday night (May 9th) it was negative, but Sat (May 10th) it was positive indicating the surge and that ovulation would occur within 24-36 hrs. It was also positive Sunday (2 tests) and Monday.

We had sex Sunday (May 11th) morning, approx 34-46 hrs after surge.

I am in the zone for my period if we didnt' conceive, and am wondering if maybe the hCG is so low that it's not producing a result on the Pregnancy Test.

My question (2 part), after this huge story, is #1 can I have a surge while on Nuva Ring, even though its meant to prevent ovulation and #2 how long once off the Nuva Ring do the hormones go back to normal?

THank you for any help.

Some women still ovulate on NuvaRing (or any other estrogen birth control) so that could explain the surge. How long have you been off of it?

When you first come off of the ring, you might get some really weird readings.

This month will be 2 months off the nuva ring. I'm monitoring my morning temp to guage when I will ovulate to get a better understanding of what is normal for me, without being on the nuva ring.
Seems so simple to just line up the ovulation time with sex, but if your body isnt' balanced it won't happen. Could have a fertilized egg and it just not attach.

Let me know if you know how long it usually takes once off the ring and what I can do to help speed it up and/or enhance my ability.

Thanks!

Some women regulate right away after getting off of it, but for some it may take a few months. Are your periods regular? That would be a sign that your cycle has regulated. I've heard somewhere that tracking ovulation is most effective once you've had three regular (not birth control induced) periods.

If after a few months, your cycle hasn't regulated, your doctor can prescribe you medicataion to jump start it, but that probably won't be necessary.

Remember that a normal healthy couple can take up to a year to conceive!!
